If, like me, you’re a fan of Downton Abbey…
Did you happen to see in Series 5, Episode 2, where Lady Mary Crawley forces her maid, Anna Bates, to secretly purchase (what would have been) a rubber cervical cap? 😯
Note: This purchase was guided by (real-life birth control campaigner) Dr. Marie Stopes’ (controversial) 1918 book Wise Parenthood.
Not only did this episode reflect the 1920s societal shifts where contraception was becoming more accessible — albeit still considered taboo — but it also highlighted Mary’s calculated effort to avoid pregnancy while exploring a sexual relationship with Lord Gillingham, making this device a symbol of her growing independence.
Fast forward 100 years, and you can now purchase a (modern) cervical cap & contraceptive gel discreetly off the internet. This is ironic, really, given that there is no longer any stigma attached to this device. Although… there is something relatively scandalous about purchasing a cervical cap in the 2020s: they’ve not actually been available for purchase during this era — until now that is!
